NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 — sour-service material

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 governs metallic materials for use in H₂S-containing (sour) oil & gas environments. It sets requirements to resist sulphide stress cracking (SSC), hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and stress-oriented HIC — through hardness limits (typically ≤ 22 HRC for carbon steel), approved grades, and mandatory testing.

Standards — common questions

What is NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156?
The standard governing metallic materials for H₂S-containing (sour) oil & gas service. It sets requirements to resist SSC, HIC and SOHIC — hardness limits (typically ≤ 22 HRC for carbon steel), approved grades and testing (NACE TM0177, TM0284).
What is the difference between ASTM A106 and A53 pipe?
A106 is seamless carbon steel rated for high-temperature service; A53 covers seamless & ERW pipe for general and lower-temperature service. Chemistry is similar for Gr B, but A106 is specified where temperature rating and pressure integrity matter.
What is the EN equivalent of ASTM A312 TP316L?
Grade 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2), supplied to EN 10216-5 (seamless) or EN 10217-7 (welded). TP304L corresponds to 1.4307 and TP321 to 1.4541.
