Sour-service procurement
A “NACE” label is not a complete purchase specification. Give the project-approved material requirements and operating envelope to the supplier, then confirm the evidence for the quoted material before ordering.
Understand the standard’s scope
ISO 15156 addresses selection and qualification of metallic materials against cracking in H₂S-containing oil and gas production and natural-gas sweetening environments. It supplements the applicable design requirements. Its scope does not automatically extend to refining and downstream equipment.
Part 1 covers general principles; Part 2 addresses carbon and low-alloy steels and cast irons; Part 3 addresses corrosion-resistant and other alloys. Selection must reflect the intended service. Resistance within defined conditions does not mean immunity under every condition.

Send the engineering requirements with the RFQ
- Project material specification, applicable standard parts, editions and amendments.
- Component, product standard, grade, dimensions, quantity and manufacturing route.
- Engineer-defined service envelope, including relevant H₂S exposure, temperature, fluid composition and operating conditions.
- Specified heat treatment, fabrication or welding conditions and qualification evidence.
- Required test methods, sampling, acceptance criteria and inspection plan.
- Certificate type, traceability, document review and approval responsibilities.
Ask the project’s materials engineer to resolve missing service data and acceptance criteria. AAM Steel can review a defined supply enquiry; material selection approval remains with the project.
Confirm evidence for the offered material
Review the quotation against each requirement. Ask for the documents and test reports named by the project, linked to the offered material. Record exclusions and deviations for approval before purchase. A grade name or a general supplier statement is insufficient evidence of every sour-service requirement.
This guide provides no hardness, pressure, temperature or test acceptance limits. Those values must come from the governing project documents and licensed standard provisions.
Buyer questions
Does AAM Steel claim blanket NACE certification?
Does an EN 10204 3.1 certificate alone establish sour-service suitability?
Can you quote without complete service data?
