EN 10204 3.1 vs 3.2

Both certificate types report compliance with the order and specific inspection results. The difference is who validates the document. Specify the required type before ordering; a certificate label alone does not establish project suitability.

Who validates each certificate?

TypeValidation
3.1The manufacturer’s authorized inspection representative, independent of its manufacturing department.
3.2The manufacturer’s independent inspection representative together with the purchaser’s authorized representative, or an inspector designated by official regulations.

The product specification, applicable regulation and order define the tests and test unit. Specific inspection can cover the supplied products or the test unit to which they belong.

A buyer’s document review checklist

  • Match the manufacturer, material specification and grade to the approved purchase order.
  • Check heat or batch references against the material markings and delivery documents.
  • Compare reported results with the project’s specified acceptance criteria.
  • Identify the responsible validation parties and resolve missing or inconsistent information before acceptance.
  • For a split delivery, ask how the supplied quantity remains linked to the original certificate.

This is a procurement checklist, not an independent inspection or a declaration that a particular material complies.

Arrange 3.2 requirements before the order

Include the nominated inspector, inspection plan, witness or hold points, required tests and document language in the RFQ. Confirm inspection access, timing and costs in the quotation.

For existing material with a 3.1 document, ask the inspection body what can be established from the available evidence. LRQA describes an “intent of” 3.2 service subject to requirements; do not assume that an additional stamp creates a full 3.2 certificate or that a project accepts an alternative.

What AAM Steel can confirm

AAM Steel supplies EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 certificates. State the document requirement in your enquiry so the offered material and inspection arrangements can be confirmed. ISO 9001:2015 is a quality-management certification; it does not replace a material inspection certificate.

Buyer questions

Does 3.2 mean a higher material grade?
No. Specify the material grade separately. The document type describes the inspection-document validation arrangement.
Can I request a certificate after buying?
Ask before ordering. Retrospective arrangements depend on available traceability, inspection evidence and project acceptance; they are not guaranteed.
What should I include in my certificate RFQ?
Send the material specification, grade, quantity, required certificate type, inspection plan, nominated inspector and destination.

Send your specification and BOQ

AAM Steel quotes by RFQ from Doha. Availability, inspection documents, lead time and delivery terms are confirmed for the offered material.
