/ What is GI pipe?

GI pipe full form & meaning

GI pipe stands for Galvanized Iron pipe — a mild steel pipe coated with a protective layer of zinc by hot-dip galvanizing. The zinc coating shields the steel from rust and corrosion, giving the pipe a long service life in water and outdoor environments. GI pipe is one of the most widely used pipes for water supply, plumbing, fire-fighting and general fabrication across the GCC.

GI pipe is manufactured to BS 1387, EN 10255 and ASTM A53, hot-dip galvanized to BS EN ISO 1461, and supplied in three wall-thickness classes — Light (Class A), Medium (Class B) and Heavy (Class C) — from DN15 (½″) to DN150 (6″), either screwed & socketed or plain-end.

/ Classes & standards

Light, Medium & Heavy class

Class A — Light

Thinnest wall, lowest pressure rating. General low-pressure water & non-critical lines.

Class B — Medium

The most common class — plumbing, water distribution and structural use. Best all-round balance.

Class C — Heavy

Thickest wall, highest pressure rating. Fire-fighting mains and higher-pressure service.
