Pipe weight per metre depends on OD, wall thickness and material density. The chart below gives kg/m for carbon steel (7850 kg/m³) in the two most-used schedules. For stainless multiply by ~1.02, for duplex ~0.99; for any grade, size or schedule use our pipe weight calculator.

Common questions

How do you calculate pipe weight per metre?
Weight (kg/m) = (OD − wall) × wall × π × density ÷ 1,000,000, with OD and wall in mm. For carbon steel density is 7850 kg/m³; multiply by the density ratio for other materials.
What is the weight of 4 inch Schedule 40 pipe?
A 4 inch (NPS 4, OD 114.3 mm) SCH 40 carbon steel pipe has a 6.02 mm wall and weighs about 16.08 kg per metre.
What is the weight of 2 inch Schedule 40 pipe?
A 2 inch (NPS 2, OD 60.3 mm) SCH 40 carbon steel pipe weighs about 5.44 kg per metre (3.91 mm wall).
Does stainless steel pipe weigh more than carbon steel?
Slightly — stainless is about 2% denser (≈8000 vs 7850 kg/m³), so a same-size stainless pipe weighs ~2% more. Duplex is marginally lighter than carbon steel.
