Steel Sheet Weight Calculator

Calculate the weight of a steel or stainless sheet from its length, width, thickness (gauge) and grade — per sheet, per square metre and total.

Weight per sheet
36.8 kg
Total for 1: 36.8 kg
Per m²: 11.8 kg/m²
2500 × 1250 × 1.5 mm

Results are indicative; confirm exact mill weights on your MTC. For pipe use the pipe weight calculator.

How to calculate steel sheet weight

A sheet is a thin plate, so the same formula applies — with length, width and thickness in mm and density in kg/m³:

Weight (kg) = L × W × T × density ÷ 1,000,000,000

Per square metre, kg/m² = thickness (mm) × density ÷ 1000. A standard 2500 × 1250 mm 1.5 mm 304 sheet weighs about 37.5 kg. Choose the grade above (stainless 8000, carbon 7850, aluminium 2700 kg/m³).

Common questions

How do you calculate the weight of a steel sheet?
Multiply length × width × thickness (mm) by density (kg/m³) and divide by 1,000,000,000. A 1.5 mm 304 sheet is about 12 kg/m².
What is the weight of a 1.5 mm stainless steel sheet per m²?
About 12 kg/m² (1.5 × 8000 ÷ 1000). A full 2500 × 1250 mm sheet is roughly 37.5 kg.
How much does a 2mm mild steel sheet weigh per square metre?
15.7 kg/m² (2 × 7850 ÷ 1000) for carbon/mild steel.
Is sheet weight different from plate weight?
The formula is identical; the terms differ by thickness — sheet is generally up to ~6 mm, plate above. Both are calculated the same way.
