How to calculate steel plate weight

Plate weight is simply volume × density. With length, width and thickness in millimetres and density in kg/m³:

Weight (kg) = L × W × T × density ÷ 1,000,000,000

Per square metre it reduces to kg/m² = thickness (mm) × density ÷ 1000 — so a 10 mm carbon-steel plate is 78.5 kg/m², and 10 mm stainless (8000 kg/m³) is 80 kg/m². The calculator above does this for any grade and quantity.

Common questions

How do you calculate the weight of a steel plate?
Multiply length × width × thickness (all in mm) by the material density (kg/m³) and divide by 1,000,000,000. For carbon steel the density is 7850 kg/m³.
What is the weight of a 10 mm steel plate per square metre?
A 10 mm carbon-steel plate weighs 78.5 kg/m² (10 × 7850 ÷ 1000). In 316 stainless (8000 kg/m³) it is 80 kg/m².
What is the weight of a 2000 × 1000 × 10 mm steel plate?
About 157 kg in carbon steel — 2000 × 1000 × 10 × 7850 ÷ 1,000,000,000.
Does grade change plate weight?
Yes — weight scales with density. Stainless is ~2% heavier than carbon steel, aluminium is ~66% lighter. Select the grade above.
